New West Coast paper under study

PA Westport Como Holdings, the owner of the “Hokitika Guardian,” is considering launching a newspaper to cover the entire West Coast and Buller regions, company spokesmen confirmed yesterday. The chief executive of the Como subsidiary, Media Link, Ken Read, said his company was investigating a few options for a new newspaper. “At present it’s entirely speculative. You only have to breathe something and someone’s on to it,” he said. He confirmed the directors were aware of a feasibility study being

done and expected circulation figures had yet to be collated and analysed. The “Westport News” yesterday reported Media Link had begun advertising for reporting and office staff for the new paper. Kevin Smith, the financial adviser to the “Hokitika Guardian,” confirmed that Media Link had begun advertising for staff but said the proposal had yet to be accepted by the board of directors. “I believe the matter has got out of hand,” he said.

“Until I get the goahead from the board ... I have no further comment.”
