Dunedin wool prices mixed

PA Wellington Wool prices were mixed at the recent Dunedin sale, the market indicator gaining 7c a kg clean on last Thursday’s sale to 574 c, the Wool Board said. The exchange rate had weakened from 0.6660 U.S. dollars on Thursday to 0.6625, a drop of 0.5 per cent. The offering of 2966 clean tonnes (25,135 bales) comprised: 44 per cent crossbred fleece, 17 per cent crossbred second shear, 6 per cent halfbred fleece, and 3 per cent Merino fleece, the balance being skirtings, oddments and miscellaneous.

Compared with the Christchurch sale the previous Friday, Merino fleece 19 and 20 micron

was 5 per cent dearer, while 22 and 24 micron was unchanged. Halfbred fleece 26 and 27 micron was also unchanged but 28 to 31 micron was up to 2 per cent dearer.

Compared with Napier last Thursday, crossbred fleece 32 to 34 micron and first lambs were slightly dearer. Crossbred fleece 35 micron and coarser, and second shear were generally unchanged. Cotts and bulky skirtings were up to 2.5 per cent cheaper. Oddments were slightly cheaper.

The board gave very strong support, bidding on 45 per cent, while having passed or sold to it 21 per

cent, 552 clean tonnes (4680 bales). Board activity was focused mainly on better colour and best length crossbred fleece. The next sale will be a combined Timaru/Invercargill fixture at Christchurch offering 3186 clean tonnes (27,000 bales) on January 28.
