Sound trial from Lu
PA Wellington A sound semi-final trial for Saturday’s $300,000 Foster’s Wellington Cup was recorded by Lu at Trentham yesterday morning. Galloping on the plough, Lu, in the hands of his raceday rider, David Skelton, ran a circuit of the track and finished strongly over the last 800 m in 49.85, the concluding 600 m in 36.85.
Lu finished midfield on the first day of the meet-
ing last Saturday, but Skelton said yesterday that the horse’s chances were not helped by being caught wide, and that on reflection he had made his move forward a little early. Lu was a close third to Rastes in last year’s cup when the track conditions were easy, and any easing of the track for Saturday would be in his favour.
Key Sian and Naisbie, stablemates of Lu, worked in the middle of the firm
course proper, and came to the finish of 600 m in 35.55.
The Cambridge trainer, Laurie Laxon, said that the Wellington Cup top weight, Empire Rose, had come through her race at Trentham on Monday very well. She beat all but a lightweight, Dark Moments, in the Summer Handicap. Yesterday Laxon walked Empire Rose around the course on a lead.
