Gardener’s racing ! gear returned

NZPA-AAP Wollongong Thieves have returned the stolen racing gear that Australian Sportsman Of The Year, Wayne Gardner, wore when he won the World 500 cc motorcycle racing title. Gardner’s leather racing suit, gloves and boots disappeared when thieves broke into Gardner’s Wollongong townhouse while he was overseas in December.

On Monday, Gardner and his fiancee, Donna Forbes, found the gear outside their home when they returned from shopping. “It is great to have it back,” Gardner said. “It wasn’t the monetary value that I was worried about. The replacement cost was probably $3OOO but this

particular suit had memories that could never be replaced. “It was the one I wore to win the Brazilian Grand Prix and wrap up the World Championships so it was pretty special,” he said. Gardner was named Wollongong’s Citizen Of The Year on Monday for his outstanding achievements in 1987 that saw him become the first Australian to win the World 500 cc Championship. Gardner has also won the A.B.C.’s Sportsman Of The Year and Sport Australia Male Athlete Of The Year awards. Gardner will start his defence of the World Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix on March 27.
