Three hurt in crash
A 71-year-old man was trapped for 90 minutes after a head-on collision between the Nissan Sunny (top) and a Valiant Charger (bottom) near Amberley yesterday afternoon.
The crash happened on the main highway a few kilometres north of the town about 3.30 p.m. The accident was attended by the Fire Service, Ministry of Transport officers and a rescue vehicle from Rangiora. The elderly man was not freed until 5 p.m., when he was taken to Christchurch Hospital
with moderate to serious leg and head injuries. Two other occupants of the cars were hurt in the crash, one seriously. The names and conditions of the injured people were not available last evening. A milk tanker ■ driver was in hospital with moderate head injuries and a broken leg after his vehicle rolled down a bank on Banks Peninsula yesterday morning. The milk tanker left the Pigeon Bay Road about 9.20 a.m. and rolled four or five times down a 60m bank. ]
The Akaroa Fire Service rescue vehicle attended the crash, after the alarm was raised by a passing Akaroa County Council truck-driver.
The man was carried back up the bank and was later transferred to a Christchurch St John ambulance for the trip to Christchurch Hospital.
His name and condition were not available yesterday.
The Tai Tapu Dairy Company tanker, valued at $BO,OOO, was believed to be a write-off.
