Ultra Sound on trial for Oaks

Special correspondent Invercargill Ultra Sound is poised to record her eighth career success in the 514,000 Gore Guineas at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting today. The 1400-metre feature for three-year-olds is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the second leg of the T.A.B. treble and is also a T.A.B. trifecta event.

Ultra Sound will be on trial today for the Wellington Oaks at Trentham on Saturday. Providing she comes through this assignment to the satisfaction of Ted Winsloe, she will leave Gore tomorrow on the first stage of her Wellington Oaks campaign. Ultra Sound”s career record is a fine recommendation for today’s feature and she will be ridden by the leading Canterbury jockey, Grant Davison. From 15 starts Ultra Sound has had seven wins from 15 races, with six other placings. Her main obstacle to success today may be a wide barrier draw (No. 14) at the difficult 1400-metre peg at Gore.

Bloodstone, away from racing since contesting the New Zealand 2000

Guineas at Riccarton in November, is an interesting runner. Brian Anderton thought enough of him in the spring to campaign him in three-year-old features in the North Island. He has won two of his seven starts and finished third in another.

Rakahooka Looka and Royal Friend are others which will be favoured. Rakahooka Looka has won three of his 11 starts and been placed in four others. He continues to make the improvement expected of him with experience. Royal Friend has won three races and been placed three times from 11 starts. On her day, she is certainly above average. Windsor’s Pal is unlikely to start. He ran second at Trentham on Saturday. In an open field, Three Guys, Matthew Sage and Admiral’s Flight will have some followers, but they would need to produce peak efforts to beat Ultra Sound.

Vamos a Beber, winner of three of his last four starts, is a likely favourite for the Glamatex Coatings 1800 m the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Selections 12.35: Gay Musketeer, Grant; Wee Bee. 1.10: Classic Flight, Entangle, The Butcher. 1.45: Hartley, Karere Sea, Robert McKenzie. 2.20: Hone Iti, Rameses, Benger Valley. 2.55: Imperial Lady, Zaphir, Baldana. 3.35: Ultra Sound, Bloodstone, Rakahooka Looka. 4.10: Mingle, Vamos A Beber, Dalvey. 4.45: Light Sentence, Good Taste, Ocean Double.
