N.Z.-bred gelding wins Hong Kong feature

PA Hong Kong The New Zealand-bred gelding, Flying Dancer, has won the $NZ285,171 Invitation Cup, the richest race on the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s calendar.

The week-end’s race featured entries from Singapore and Malaysia and carried a first prize of $NZ165,400 for Flying Dancer’s owner, Lim Poryen.

Flying Dancer was ridden by a South African jockey, Bart Leisher, who was allowed to ride after appealing against an eight meeting foul-riding suspension.

Flying Dancer (6-1) drew away from Top Grade (7-2) and Yuno When (5-1) to win the 1800 m event.

Last year the five-year-old won the “horse of the year” award, after wins in the weight-for-age Hong Kong Champions and Chater Cup Classic. Flying Dancer (by Ballybrit from Pur Sang) is trained by Brinn Kan Ping-chee.
