SWIMMING The Canterbury swimming championships concluded at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Sunday evening with encouraging times for two of the province’s top competitors, Linda Robinson (Wharenui) and Anna Sincic (Avon Aquatics). Robinson, whose best event is the 400 m medley, produced a time only one nine-hun-dredths of second outside her own Canterbury record to win the open women’s title. Robinson’s time of smin 2.06 s came at the conclusion of a strenuous two weeks, which included the Queensland championships in addition to the Canterbury titles. She and the other members of the Wharenui squad have been training during both championships so by the time she has; sharpened for the national age-group championships in Papakura next month, the five minute barrier should be within her grasp. ’ The Seoul Olympic qualifying time of 4min 55.82 at the national open championships in Dunedin in March could then be within reach. Simcic, who iS tantalisingly close to Olympic- qualifying times in the 100 and 200 m backstroke, swam especially well in Secondary events at the Canterbury championships. On Sunday evening, she won the 15, 16, 17 years 100 m butterfly final in Imin 5.415, a personal best. The national titleholder Phillippa Langrell (Wharenui) could only finish third, with Robinson filling second place.
