Rowlands triumphs

The young P class skipper, Alister Rowlands, opened his account with a fine win, in the first race of the Graham Mander Trophy sailed on the Estuary yesterday. Rowlands battled hard throughout the race, and only got to the front on the last beat to the finish, when he took full advantage of a wind lift to out-sail Mathew Stechman — and win by 235. A fleet of 26 boats started the race in light conditions, with Robert Sinclair in Patere, making a good start. Aphrodite skippered by Milton Bloomfield and Mathew Stechman in Echo also started well, with the pair passing Sinclair on the first ' beat, and Stechman rounding the top mark 9s in

front of Bloomfield. At the wind mark, Stechman’s lead was chopped to Is by Bloomfield and on the run to the bottom mark, Bloomfield passed Stechman to round the mark 6s in front. On the beat up to the finish Stechman and Rowlands picked up a good lift, but Bloomfield sailed into the tide and was badly knocked. Meanwhile, Rowlands made the better of the lift to win by 23s from Stechman, with Neil Briggs at the helm of Tiki Tak Two, a further Is back in third place. Results: Race one: Barnacle (A. Rowlands), 1; Echo (M. Stechman) 2; Tiki Tak Two (N. Briggs) 3.
