Slab slip fatally based
PA Wellington A steel slab which crushed a workman to death in Petone on Sunday lacked suitable support, said a Lower Hutt Labour Department senior inspector of factories, Mr Adrian Verry.
The accident site at Steam and Sand, Ltd, was inspected on Monday, after the death of Mr Raymond Michael Hamilton, aged 37, who had been sandblasting a disassembled crane. Mr Hamilton had been sandblasting one of the crane’s solid steel counterweights. Mr Verry said it appeared he had blasted the bottom of the slab which undermined it and fell on him.
He said the weights should have been properly supported or placed on solid ground before the blasting was done. No decision has yet been made about whether legal action will be taken.
