Obituary Mr Fergus Murray
Mr Fergus John Boag Murray, a senior history master at Christchurch Boys’ High School for more than 30 years, has died. He was aged 85. Mr Murray, known affectionately to generations of high school pupils as “Ferg,” was born in Pending, but later carried out his schooling in Christchurch. He graduated from Canterbury University College in 1925, with first-class honours in history.
After training at Christchurch Teachers’ College,
Mr Murray was a relieving teacher at Christchurch Boys’ High School, and also taught at St Andrew’s College. In 1930 he was ap L pointed history master at Boys’ High School, and later became first assistant. Until his retirement in 1959, he took part in many school activities, including sport, the cadet scheme, and as housemaster of Adams House, the school’s hostel.
After retiring, Mr Murray worked with the inspectorate and was the
acting principal of Darfield High School. He was a founding member, with J. J. Saunders, of the Canterbury Historical Society. His publications included a centennial history of Knox Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder, and a chapter in his old school’s history. He contributed commentaries on current affairs to the radio programme “Lookout,” after the Second World War.
Mr Murray is survived by his son.
