Money stolen to repay ‘loan shark’

PA Wellington A bank employee stole money so he could repay a “loan shark” from whom he had borrowed money to pay for flying lessons, a lawyer told the Wellington District Court. Peter Alistair Scully, aged 21, unemployed, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft as a servant of the bank last October. Judge von Dadelszen ordered Scully to repay the outstanding $lBOO of the $3500 he had taken.

The Judge said he understood the theft was brought about by financial pressure and it appeared the offences were out of character for Scully. Scully’s lawyer, Mrs Rachael Dewar, said he was taking flying lessons and borrowed money from a “loan shark” to pay for them. He took the money from the bank to repay the loan. Scully had repaid $l7OO to the bank, she said.
