Fire damages Kaiapoi shop

Fire caused moderate damage to the Save the Children Fund shop in Kaiapoi yesterday afternoon.

The blaze in the twostorey wooden building, at the corner of Hilton Street and Black Street, was reported at 3.15 p.m. The Kaiapoi, Rangiora and

Woodend volunteer fire brigades attended. A room at the rear of the shop, containing a large heap of clothing, was burnt. Clothing on display in the front of the shop was damaged by smoke.

The fire travelled up ducting and caused dam-

age to a rear wall above the shop. Three upstairs flats were smoke-dam-aged. Two downstairs premises alongside the Save the Children Fund store, a physiotherapist’s rooms and a grocery store, are believed to have escaped damage.
