Palsy sufferer to leave for Hungary

PA Auckland An Auckland couple who have a two-year-old son with cerebral palsy will take him to a famous institution in Hungary for an assessment of his condition.

Stephen and Diane James said they leave with Daniel for the Andras Peto Institute for Motor Disorders in Budapest on Saturday. The couple, who live in the North Shore borough of Devonport, said it was

a long journey for what was basically a four-hour assessment. However, they say Daniel should not be denied such a chance. Mrs James said: “Daniel either gets institutionalised later, or we go to Hungary now, and give him as good a life as he deserves.” The institute is primarily for Hungarian children. It is believed Daniel will be the first New Zealander to enter Peto’s

doors. They said a four-hour assessment would determine whether Daniel would be accepted for more tests and then a place in the school which boasts a 70 per cent success rate for its pupils. They are confident he will be accepted. “He seems fairly suitable,”. Mrs James said. Daniel, who will turn three on February 5, has the motor capability of a three-month-old baby.
