Dead bull blamed for fire

PA Napier Two fighting bulls are having to shoulder the blame for a fire which threatened a woolshed north of Wairoa. The fire was on Pukekau Station, Marumaru, farmed by Roly and Jenny Kent.

The two bulls had had another of their regular battles, but as it turned out, their last, Mrs Kent said. They fought each other to an end of a gorge and both fell over, where one died. "The dead bull was really stinking,” she said. “My husband decided to burn it where it was because it was too far down the gorge to shift. “He had the fire under control, then some pampas grass caught fire and then some pine cones. The pine cones rolled down the hill, spreading the fire. “That’s when we called the brigade,” she said. The fire burned about I.sha of grassland and reached within 30rrfe of the woolshed.
