Overcoming odour

Sir, —The time for taking action to prevent unpleasant smells being emitted from the C. S. Stevens meat works in Kaiapoi (January 19) was when the change was made to the irrigation system. For too long Government departments, in their efforts to improve the quality of water discharged from industrial and sewage treatment plants, have neglected considering the side effects of air pollution. When odours are a source of concern and embarrassment to thousands of people there is a hidden cost to the community that is quite substantial. Technology has existed for some years to prevent and reduce such odours and, in this instance, it could have been applied from the inception of the new system.—Yours, etc., P. V. NEARY, Hon. secretary, Clean Air Society. January 21, 1988.
