Cheviot field day
The 800 ha Cheviot hill country farm of Bob and Isla McFadden — winners of the Lincoln, College Foundation’s ’ annual farmer of the year competition — will be the site of a field day on Thursday, February 11. The McFadden’s property, known as “The Acheron,” has been developed from virtually bare land with stock numbers rising from 1500 in 1966 to 7000 today. Their aim has been to run a low cost operation and get high net profit from above average performance in fine wool, said Mr Jim Malcolm, of Lincoln College. “But they have also paid close attention to market signals — tried to read them and respond ahead of time.”
