Best sale for Romneys
A New Zealand record price of $35,000 for a Romney ram was set during a buoyant Southern Provinces Romney ram fair at Gore recently. The top price was paid for a ram (Fernvale 402/ 86) from H. T. Brenssell, of Moa Flat, and bought by Paki-iti Farm, Ltd, of Feilding.
Strong demand from buyers throughout New Zealand was a feature of the fair, described as the most successful Romney sale ever. The average price for 240 rams was $3725 and the sale grossed $894,000, well ahead of last year’s total of $510,000.
Mr Brenssell received another excellent price of
$30,000 for a ram bought for export to Argentina. Ram sales by Canterbury breeders included: — O. J. Adams averaged $7250 for 12 rams with a top price of $30,000 (bought by H. T. Brenssell, B. J. Brenssell, and Taharua ; Partnership): A. N. and E. L. Chamberlain i averaged $4020 for five;,D. R. and S. J. Wyllie' averaged $3530 for five; P. C. Macaulay averaged $4650 for two; D. S. Giddings averaged $3530 for seven; D. R.. and D. E. Cameron averaged $4050 for two; V. Chamberlain sold one at $4000; Haines Family Trust averaged $2650 for three; C. T. Burrows averaged $3OOO for eight;
Taharua Partnership averaged $3350 for two; N. C. Davidson averaged $l2OO for three; D. M. and J. D. Stowell averaged $3666 for three; H. G. E. Taylor sold one at $1800; M. J. and M. A. Loffhagen averaged $1550 for three; R. J. and M. A. Burrows sold one at $1200; Springcreek Stud sold two at $800; W. J. Meddlicott one at $1000; and W. Donaldson averaged $1250 for four.
Prices paid by syndicates containing Canterbury breeders included $32,000 for a ram from M. I. Beattie bought by D. R. Cameron, D. Giddings, W. D. Irwin, H. Mcfadzien, and M. Erickson. H. T.
Brenssell sold a ram at $27,000 to a syndicate of A. M. Mcllraith, J. T. Miles, R. Little, S. L. Chambers and D. Stowell, and another ram at $16,000 to D. A. and S. J. Wyllie, D. Stowell, D. Marr and P. C. Macaulay.
Leatham Brothers and G. Abbott paid $lO,OOO for a ram from M. I. Beattie; O. J. Adams and A. N. and E. L. .Chamberlain paid $9500 for a ram from Tresco Romney Stud; and P. C. Macaulay, D. Marr, G. S. Marshall and Taharua Partnership paid $BOOO for a ram from O. J. Adams.
Judging at the national ewe show and sale held the evening before the ram fair resulted in M. I. Beattie taking top honours, followed by D. S. Giddings second and O. J. Adams third.
