Effective dismissal
Nelson reporter A touring Australian cricketer was hit in the head by a batted ball on Wednesday but still helped effect the dismissal of the batsman. John Giles Phillips, aged 17, a member of the Pulteney Grammar team from Adelaide, was struck in the forehead by a fullblooded blow while field-
ing in the silly mid-off position against a Nelson selection. The ball glanced off his head into the waiting gloves of the Adelaide wicketkeeper, who held the catch to dismiss the Nelson opening batsman, Donald Hunter, for 21 runs. Phillips sustained a lump on his head and was admitted to Nelson Hos-
pital for overnight observation. A hospital spokesman said he was “feeling a little better” yesterday, and was expected to be discharged to rejoin his team-mates today. To add insult to the unfortunate injury, Pulteney Grammar lost the 60over match by four wickets.
