England wins easily

PA Wellington England, with its toporder batsmen relishing the absence of a threatening bowling attack, romped to its first cricket victory on tour, defeating Wellington by eight wickets at the Basin Reserve yesterday. Set a modest but not daunting target of 202 in the limited overs one-day match, England never looked in trouble. Two half-centuries were scored, the second through a kind and gentlemanly act of the middleorder batsman, John Emburey, towards Bill Athey, who came in at first drop. Wellington began the day disastrously, losing its first wicket with the score on 10.

The former New Zealand opener, Bruce Edgar, was on eight when he was trapped leg before to England’s main strike bowler, Graham Dilley, in his ' second over. Only' those English players who did not play yesterday will work in the nets today in Wellington. The team will fly to Hamilton this evening for the next fixture against the Shell Trophy leader, Northern Districts, a three-day match to begin tomorrow. WELLINGTON B. Edgar lbw Dilley .... 8 G.
