Union appealing name change

PA Wellington The Labourers’ Union is appealing to the Labour Court over a decision by the registrar of unions for a name change for the Carpenters’ Union. In October, the registrar gave approval for the Carpenters’ Union to be renamed the Building Workers’ Union. The Labourers’ Union is objecting to the change and a hearing is set down for February 4 in the Labour Court. The national secretary of the Labourers’ Union, Charlie Clayton, said his union objected to the carpenters having the title of the Building Workers’ Union.

“They are not the only building workers in the country. Our members also work on building sites ... we think the name causes confusion,” he said. The national secretary for the newly named union, Mr Ashley Russ, said the move to a more general name made sense. The Carpenters’ Union had been supplanted by more than 20 amalgamations of unions in the last 20 years. It was now a leading union in the building construction industry representing more trades than there would be single unions in the construction industry.
