Drillers can go back on site
PA Hamilton Coromandel gold prospectors have been cleared to go back to their drill site after being stopped by an environmentalists’ protest on Saturday. 70 protestors moved on to the site, claiming that the Radial Drilling Company was taking water from a Department of Conservation - protected stream at Whangapoua. However, the acting D.O.C. regional manager in Hamilton, Mr Mike Cuddihy, said that a survey showed the stream did not fall within the criteria for protection. A 3m-wide stream had a 40m-wide protection zone and siting a pump would require D.O.C. permission. However the stream used by Radial Drilling had an average width of 2.5 m and so fell outside the department’s jurisdiction, Mr Cuddihy said. The department had no enforcing powers in such situations, but would try to work with the company in setting up an environmentally drill site.
