James arid Elizabeth most popular names

NZPA-AAP London Parents who read “The Times” are conservative when it comes to naming their children — last year James was the most popular name for boys in the paper’s birth notices for the twenty-fourth consecutive year. Emma was the most popular first name for girls, but Elizabeth was more popular as a second or later name, making it the most popular girl’s name over-all for the tenth year running. James was the most popular as a first name for boys as well as the best represented overall. Other popular names among the 5477 birth announcements were Charlotte, Sophie, Thomas and William. Another survey of babies’ names last year

showed differences between “The Times” notices and the general population. Leslie Dunkling recorded the first names chosen for babies bearing the family name Smith, about one in 70 of all births in Britain. His first name winners were Christopher and Gemma, with James in seventh place and Emma in sixth place. Charlotte and Sophie never got a look in on Mr Dunkling’s list, Sarah and Laura were much more popular. William also failed to find favour with the Smiths, despite being the name of the young Prince. According to “The Times,” Royalty and Royal events have had little effect on the popularity of children’s names since it began keeping records in 1947.
