War could widen, Fahd warns

NZPA-Reuter Riyadh King Fahd of Saudi Arabia has warned that the Iran-Iraq war could widen if Iran does not drop what he called unreasonable conditions for peace talks. At the opening of the Gulf Arab summit, King Fahd warned that the seven-year conflict could spread and that countries of the region could be forced to call for help from outside powers. “Every country could be obliged to defend itself and seek help from other countries and have the right to do so. We do not want things to reach this point,” he said. The six Gulf Co-opera-tion Council (GCC) states — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — have already been partially dragged into the war on the side of Iraq, and Kuwait has sought superpower naval protecion for its oil tankers in the Gulf.
