Central outbatted by Wgtn

PA Wellington Batting first, Wellington set a good target of 222 runs in its first Shell Cup cricket match against Central Districts on Saturday, and by using a restrictive bowling line-up, kept Central 15 runs from its total by the end of play. Wellington started strongly in the one-day game, largely due to the batting of captain Robert Vance, who scored 57 runs. Thirty of those runs included boundaries, one a six. Vance was caught on the boundary after a high full toss from Paul

Unwin which he swatted to mid-wicket. Bruce Edgar tried to keep up the team’s pace without Vance, but was out only 18 runs later, a victim of an unusual stumping. Central’s batting was slow in comparison to Wellington’s, but once settled in, lifted the scoring rate to a respectable level. The loss of the captain, lan Snook, with the total at 37, dropped the run rate again, but by the thirteenth over Central had scored its half century, faster than Wellington. With no strong batsmen
