Appeal against hotel plans for debate

By

KAY FORRESTER

Seven Christchurch City councillors have signed a notice of motion for a special council meeting this afternoon to debate a Canterbury United Council appeal against a multi-million dollar hotel development in Memorial Avenue.

The motion calling for the United Council to reconsider its appeal to the Planning Tribunal was initiated by Cr Vicki Buck. Among the councillors to add their names in support is a city representative on the United Council, Cr David Cox. Cr Cox, as replacement for Cr Hori Brennan, attended his first United Council meeting last Wednesday when the hotel appeal was discussed. He said yesterday he voted against the appeal at the United Council meeting. “I believe the green belt has already been adjusted to accommodate such things as the Commodore Hotel extensions.

The green belt has not proved to be sacrosanct in the past and I think that this development could be landscaped on Memorial Avenue and Russley Road so that we still had an attractive avenue along there,” he said. The downstream jobs generated by the project would benefit greater Christchurch, he said. Crs Buck, Cox and colleagues want the United Council to rethink its appeal against the hotel. The council decided last Wednesday by 16 votes to 12 to appeal the recent Waimairi District Council decision lifting planning restrictions barring the hotel development. The United Council decided to appeal because

the hotel is planned for land in Memorial Avenue that it has designated a green belt. Many United councillors bitterly attacked the council’s decision alppening the council up'to attack for hindering development. The hotel development is planned by Melbourne Holdings, an Invercargillbased company. With an Australian hotel chain, it planned to offer package tours using the hotel. The seven to sign the notice of motion for today’s meeting were Crs Buck, Cox, David Close, Linda Constable, Alister James, Ron Wright and Clive Cotton.
