Rewi Alley chairman of revived Gung Ho
NZPA Hong Kong A New Zealander, Mr Rewi Alley, has been appointed chairman of the revived International. Committee for the Promotion of Chinese Industrial Co-operatives (Gung Ho). Mr Alley, aged 90, who is hospitalised in Peking, founded the Gung Ho movement in China in the late 19305. His appointment to the chairman’s position at a recent meeting of the committee in Peking, means he is following in the footsteps of the widow of the founding father of modern China — Soong Ching-ling (Mme Sun Yatsen).
Soong Ching-ling was appointed honorary chairman of Gung Ho’s International Committee when it was first founded in Hong Kong in January 1939. News of Mr Alley’s appointment was contained in a Gung Ho International newsletter. The revived Gung Ho International Committee comprises 48 members from China, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Germany and Mexico. The honorary chairman of the revived committee is the Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Zhu Xuefan. Committee vice-chairmen are a former Red Army doctor, Ma Haide, Chen Hansheng, Hugh Deane and Lu Guangmian.
