Mr J. A. Bateman
PA Wellington Mr J. A. (Jim) Bateman, principal of the Central Institute of Technology, Upper Hutt, from 1968 until retirement in 1985, died recently. Mr Bateman was previously deputy principal of Wellington Technical College, where he was on the staff for 20 years. He served continuously as an executive member of the Technical Insti-
tutes’ Association from 1972-85, and was president in 1974 and 1975. Mr Bateman had strong interests in local body and national politics. Nationally, he was a member of the national executive of the Labour Party between 1954 and 1965, was vicepresident in 1960, and twice stood unsuccessfully for the Karori seat.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
