Bus tours
Sir,—l read with disgust, the report (November 26) of the criticism of the Transport Board’s Hills and Harbour Tour by Mrs Helen Garrett As I was the driver of this tour for 13*£ years, I listened to talk from varied quarters about the trip being subsidised by ratepayers. I did not expect to hear this from a member of the board. How can anything that is self-supporting be subsidised? In fact these profit-making tours run by the board are helping to relieve the burden of ratepayers, not increase it I would say to Mrs Garrett that out of all the years, I did this trip (approximately
3000 times) I did not hear one complaint about any part of it, including the launch trip. 1 would also point out that a lot of work was put into this tour by some very devoted staff to bring it up to what it is today, relying mainly on word-of-mouth advertising. To hear statements from a member of the board which are likely to undo that work is disheartening, to say the least— Yours, etc., B. JOYCE. November 26, 1987.
