Tower and gondola

Sir,—W. A. Sutton (November 28) claims that Christchurch is no more than “a few hectares of green sward” and that the city tower is what we need to encourage tourists to Christchurch. I find it slightly incongruous that we have to copy Australia’s ideas because we cannot think up any of our own. If a view of Christchurch is what we want, why not try the gondola idea? Surely it would be much more original and less of an eyesore. We are one of the few countries left with something original and natural to offer, such as the bush, mountains and, of course, “green sward.” —Yours, etc., CAROLE SMITH. November 29,1987.
