$4M investment
A Christchurch company is investing nearly $4 million in an indoor tennis complex — the first in the southern hemisphere expressly for the sport. The multi-court complex on Ferry Road near Woolston is believed to be the only indoor development solely for tennis outside Europe and the United States.
The local company behind the multi-million development is Southern Zone Indoor Tennis, a four-man consortium. Mr Danny Whiting, one of the directors, said the group planned to have the complex completed by March next year. Construction has begun on the 6500 sq m enclosed arena and the cost of the project is about $3.6
million. The arena will have eight full-size courts, a gymnasium, a cafeteria and a professional’s shop. The president of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Sam Clarke, said an indoor complex would be "great” for Christchurch tennis.
