Edwin Fox

Sir,—Nigel Malthus’s article on the Earthwatch programme at Kaikoura (December .1) is inaccurate with reference to the condition and location of the East Indiaman, Edwin Fox. The Edwin Fox was refloated in October, 1986; In December of that year she was brought back to Picton Harbour and for the past 12 months has been moored at Dunbar Wharf. On January 6, 1987, the Edwin Fox Restoration Society opened this fine old ship to the public and 14,000 people have paid to board her. The Government has recognised the importance of this restoration project with a $50,000 grant towards the construction of a dockside building. A small harbour reclamation necessary before construction of the building is now under way. The society would like to assure Mr Malthus that the Edwin Fox is alive and well in Picton Harbour and, being the magnanimous old lady that she is, would welcome a visit from him to see for himself. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) HONORA HORNCY, Hon. secretary, Edwin Fox Restoration Society, Picton. December 1, 1987.
