Historic B.N.Z. site sold by auction

PA Hamilton Hamilton’s historic Bank of New Zealand site has been sold by auction to a former Hamilton businessman. The 6000 sq m site on the comer of Hood, Victoria and Alexandra Streets was sold for $1.9 million at an Auckland auction.

Jones Lang Wootton sales negotiator, Brett McLean, said the property was bought by an Auckland developer. He did not know how the businessman's company was planning to develop the site but said some of his ideas were “very exciting.”

He was reluctant to comment on the price but said it was “very good buying” and the price was indicative of the market in its present state.

The BNZ site was previously owned by Admiral Investments, Ltd — an Auckland-based company headed by former Hamilton businessman Robert Chandler. The BNZ building on the corner of the site has been at the centre of discussions between the Hamilton City Council, the former owner and the Historic Places Trust. The trust believes the building is the most important public building in Hamilton. The former Minister of Conservation, Mr Marshall, signed a protection notice for the building earlier this year. The trust has given the building a B grading - recognising but not enforcing the need for preservation.
