Confusion about second royal call

Confusion surrounded the proposed return visit to the Canterbury Museum by Queen Fabiola of Belgium on Tuesday afternoon. Soon after King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola left the museum after the official visit, museum staff were contacted by a New Zealand Internal Affairs Department official accompanying the royal party. Her Majesty would like to pay a second informal visit. * “The Press” was notified of the unscheduled second call, and the Police Department arranged security. The museum’s assistant director, Mr Anthony Saville, and two staff members waited to meet the Queen. After 30 minutes the Internal

Affairs Department official telephoned again. Her Majesty had been detained during a shopping trip, but still intended to meet the engagement. By 6 p.m. it became apparent that she would be arriving at the Christchurch Town Hall for a civic reception rather than at the museum. “Just one of those things,” Mr Saville said yesterday. “But the Queen paid us the ultimate compliment of wanting to return. Throughout her earlier visit with the King she said how much she would have liked to have spent more time to see the displays.”

During her first tour, Queen Fabiola was keenly interested in the exhibits in the colonial street.
