City tower
Sir,—Many years ago the late Harry Ell defaced the Port Hills forever by slashing a road across them from end to end, visible from all parts of the city. I have heard no recent complaints of it, only praise, even from the tower’s most bitter critics. Could
not the proposed gondola be equally valued by future generations? The Victoria Square tower is under fire from some for its occupation of a small area of public land for private profit, yet no-one, to my knowledge, has condemned the punts operating on the river for exploiting a cherished public waterway for private profit. One amenity does not detract from another. Together they help to make up the complexity of resource and experience essential to a maturing city. We need them all, and more, if Christchurch is to live down its national reputation — an elaborate sort of lawn cemetery.—Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. November 30,1987.
