Austrian leader set for hearing
NZPA-Reuter Vienna Kurt Waldheim is prepared to appear before an international commission of historians investigating his World War II service in the German Army, a spokesman tor the Austrian President said yesterday.
The chairman of the six-member panel, the Swiss military historian, Hans Rudolf Kurz, had said earlier in the day that he was interested in having Mr Waldheim testify.
The Presidential spokesman said a request had not yet been received, but that Mr Waldheim was ready to meet the commission, funded by the Austrian Government after charges by the World Jewish Congress that Mr Waldheim was involved in war crimes.
The former United Nations Secretary-General denies the allegations and says he views the commission report, due out in mid-January, as non-bind-ing. He has rejected calls for his resignation. The president of Austria’s Arbeiterkammer, an organisation representing all employees in Austria, added to growing pressure on Mr Waldheim to resign.
“Waldheim himself iritist know what he has to do,” Adblf Cfcettel told the newspaper' “Kurier.”
“He must>ask himself if leaving the office of President is not the greatest service he can do for Austria.”
