Rivalry warning from Hawke
NZPA-Reuter Moscow The Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, urged the Soviet Union yesterday not to make the Pacific Ocean an arena of super-Power rivalry. Briefing reporters after more than three hours of talks with the Soviet Prime Minister, Nikolai Ryzhkov, Mr Hawke said he told him Australia understood Moscow was a Pacific power with legitimate economic interests in the region.
“But Australia has taken comfort in the past that this area, unlike many other areas of the world, has been free from super-Power tension,” he said.
“Any economic involvement (by the Soviet Union) should not be of a nature to lead to superpower rivalry.”
