Fault leads to search

A faulty emergency locator beacon prompted an air search in North Canterbury last evening. The beacon was traced to a helicopter in the Hanmer Springs and Culverden area about 8 p.m. An aircraft picked up sounds from the beacon about 5 p.m.

An Air Force Friendship flew from Wigram Air Base and found the area of the beacon. The Rescue Co-ordina-tor Centre in Wellington was also opened after sounds from the beacon were reported. Telephone inquiries among aircraft owners in the area led to the faulty beacon being found.
