Calf halts Christchurch traffic

By

GLENIS CARROLL

A renegade calf brought traffic to a standstill in central Christchurch yesterday as a team of traffic officers attempted a country round-up. The three-month-old calf slipped away from the auctioneer’s hammer at the Addington saleyards and by 9 a.m. had reached the Antigua Boatshed on Cambridge Terrace.

Four traffic officers gave chase, with the calf, dodging traffic and tackles, running towards Oxford Terrace. The calf was seen at the entrance of Shades Arcade and was said to have run across the Law Courts building site. City Council park staff joined the chase at Victoria Square and the calf cut across the Avon River several times trying to

elude pursuers. The escape came to an end at the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street when two traffic officers and a parks attendant made a successful tackle and put a halter on the calf. A passing motorist, who was towing a high-sided trailer, took temporary custody of the calf until the owner was found.
