Search for crash pair called off
The search for the two occupants of a light aircraft which crashed off the Kaikoura coast early last Friday has been called off. Brent Stewart Odering, aged 27, of Wellington, and Kathryn Sproull, aged 37, of Koromiko, are missing, presumed dead. Inspector Roger Winter, area controller for the Marlborough police, said yesterday that the search would not be resumed unless further wreckage was found.
The police believed the area had been well covered, he said. Wreckage was picked up after the crash on Friday by the crew of the Kaikoura-based fishing boat Ms Emma and other search vessels. However, a sonar scan of the sea bottom where the aircraft was believed to have crashed failed to find the greater part of the plane. Shore searches will now be limited to checks by farmers.
