Designing pupil
Sharlene Belcher, left, a seventh form art pupil at Hillmorton High School, and Mrs Thelma Easton, the school’s former librarian, admire a sample of the new carpet designed by Sharlene for the recently extended and refurbished library.
The reconstructed library was formally opened last month. It was named after Mrs Eaton, who was the' school’s librarian for 25 years until 1985, and who still supervises the archives.
Sharlene designed the carpet with the help of designers from Feltex Woven Carpets in Riccarton. The distributers, Feltex Contract Carpets, suggested the art students help produce a design as a project after consulting
the library’s architects, the Ministry of Works.
After a visit to the Riccarton design studio pupils involved in the project were given a grounding in the principles of carpet design. Sharlene’s navy blue, grey and apricot geometric pattern was used as the basis for the final design. In recognition of the pupils’ involvement in the project, the company have $250 to the school to buy library books.
Sharlene hopes to become a graphic designer, and as a first step has applied to enter a visual communications and design course offered by the Christchurch Polytechnic. She is also anxiously awaiting bursary examination results.
