Tobacco body loses battle

PA Auckland The Tobacco Institute has lost a battle to prevent a ban on cigarette advertising at Auckland Airport.

The Auckland Regional Authority airport committee banned cigarette advertising, the recommendation being passed without debate. The Tobacco Institute had previously told the committee there was no assurance that cigarette advertising had a deleterious effect. It did not increase the total tobacco market or influence people to take up smoking.

The institute’s executive director, Mr Michael Thompson, said advertising only enabled tobacco companies to compete for a share of the existing market. About a third of all adult travellers chose to smoke and as long as the sale of tobacco remained legal, advertising should remain legal too. The director of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), Deidre Kent, said that if the institute believed advertising did not produce more smokers why did it fight for it so fiercely?

She said the A.R.A. decision was marvellous news and was of international significance. She knew of no other international airport which banned cigarette advertising.

The authority is to consider any implications of the ban under the new Commerce Act.
