Goliath smart

Special correspondent Dunedin Goliath emerged as a smart three-year-old when he qualified in 3:14.7 in his first trial outing yesterday at Forbury Park. Goliath ran on boldly from third on the inner to win his heat by seven lengths. He is a gelding by Lordship from Ella Knight, a mare by Timely Knight from Sister Stella, a half-sister, by Dick Adios, to Stella Frost

He is trained at Waikouaitl by Len Mosely, jun., who produced Avion De Combat for an impressive win in the heat for trotters.

Mosely, the trainer and part-owner of the smart four-year-old Ankorman, sold his supermarket at Palmerston recently and shifted to Waikoualti to concentrate on training. He has 13 horses in work. Avion De Combat, a last start winner at Oamaru in August has only been back in work a month after being sidelined with a leg injury.

"He was turned out on the hills and it has done him the world of good,” said Mosely.

Avion De Combat has been nominated for the Waimate meeting on Saturday week, but Mosely

will wait and see how he comes through yesterday’s trial before making a decision on a start.

The other pacer to qualify yesterday was Gala Khan, who recorded 3:17.6 when winning his heat by three lengths.

Gala Khan is a handsome three-year-old colt by Lordship from Royal Gaia (by Mark Lobell) in the North Taieri team of Ross Payne. He was driven by a stable employee, Russell Devenie.

Gala Khan is owned in Dunedin by Alistair aiid Carol Halligan, who have set Payne up in the J.R. Lodge stables. Share Market, Proud Princess, Nimble Phil and Jasper Macfaber returned sound trials for their engagements at Winton on Saturday.

Share Market ran on boldly to win a CO heat A qualifier at Forbury Park last month, Share Market (Valerian—Black Folly) will be driven on Saturday by All Malcolmson.

Proud Princess held on to dead-heat with Chipliner in the free-for-all after leading from the 1800 m. She was travelling comfortably at the finish. Chipliner held on well after being in the open. Nimble Phil came from the tail of the field at the 400 m to win the Cl event.
