Worthington and Goss holidaying in N.Z.
Special correspondent
Palmerston North The former New Zealand jockeys, Paul Worthington and Paul Goss, who are both now based at Mornington, near Melbourne, are in New Zealand for a brief holiday, though it’s more important business for Goss. He is getting married in Palmerston North on Saturday with Worthington in attendance. Goss moved to Melbourne a couple of years ago. He is working for the former Awapuni trainer, Theo Howe. But it has not been all plain sailing for Goss who, along with Worthington, rode track work at Awapuni yesterday morning.
Goss has been plagued with injury, and at one stage last year he was away from riding for seven months with a broken wrist. He has had other broken bones as well, including a collarbone.
“Every time I have a fall I seem to break something. It’s very frustrating,” Goss said. He has still managed to ride about a dozen winners in Australia, including the Australian Steeplechase on Arabian Myth. Goss has ridden 99 winners in his career to date. He hopes to bring up the century when he rides Doctrine Heir in the highweight at Trentham on Saturday. Then he and
Worthington will be rushing back to Palmerston North to prepare for the 6 p.m. wedding. Worthington hopes to pick up a ride at Trentham, too.. The former Patea jockey is attached to the stable of Peter Fell. Worthington has ridden 14 winners since moving to Australia, his best success being in the Great Eastern Steeplechase at Oakbank, a race won a couple of times by Stephen Jenkins, who is at present in the United States riding Am Sweet.
Both Worthington and Goss have settled in well at Mornington and it’s unlikely that they will return to New Zealand to work in the near future.
