France, Iran in swap
NZPA-Reuter Nicosia French consul Paul Torri flew from Teheran to Pakistan yesterday to be swapped for Iranian interpreter Vahid Gordji and end a Franco-Iranian diplomatic crisis, a French Embassy official in Teheran said. The official said by telephone that Torri left early yesterday aboard a chartered aircraft for Karachi. Gordji was already heading for Karachi for the exchange, said the official, who declined to be named. The Iranian official’s aircraft, which French sources said was a Falcon-Mystere jet, later landed at Cyprus’s Larnaca airport to refuel for the trip to Pakistan. In Teheran, the French Embassy official said Iranian security forces who had ringed the building since the crisis erupted in July had been withdrawn. France had already removed security forces from around Iran’s Embassy in Paris.
