‘The Fox’ critically
NZPA-PA Dublin Dessie O’Hare, the fugitive wounded in a gun battle which led to his arrest, was said to be "improving” at Dublin’s Saint Vincent’s Hospital, in Dublin. Surgeons who operated on the so-called Border Fox stressed that he was still on the critically ill list. O’Hare’s private room
at the hospital is under heavy armed guard, as detectives wait to interview him about a number of crimes on both sides of the Irish border, including last month’s kidnapping of a Dublin dentist, John O’Grady. O’Hare was hit 15 times in the shoot-out on Friday which ended his freedom and led to the death of an accomplice, Martin Bryan, aged 29.
The Irish Republic’s massive anti-IRA security operation, which, allied to a tip-off, helped flush out O’Hare, has ended its first week. The nationwide sweep, involving more than 7000 troops and police, was concentrated at the weekend on Irish borderside areas, particularly in Counties Monaghan and Cavan.
