Mr Brennan to quit

A member of the Canterbury United Council, Mr Hori Brennan, will resign his appointment before the December council meeting. Cr Brennan is one of five Canterbury City Council appointees on the United Council. He was in strife after November’s meeting of the council when his apology for absence was the subject of debate. However, Cr Brennan’s City Council Labour teammate, Cr Alex Clark, urged the council to wait because the matter would be “speedily resolved.” Cr Clark said last evening that Cr Brennan had definitely decided to resign this time. He had previously indicated he would resign after a row blew up in April over his continued absence from meetings.

He cited heavy commitments at the National Marae in Christchurch as the reason for his absence. The Local Government Act says that if a councilV

lor is absent for four meetings in a row he or she is automatically disqualified. Cr Brennan has attended only one meeting this term. He is believed to be only the third United Councillor to resign. One councillor resigned because she moved from the region and more recently another-City Council appointee, Cr Vicki Buck, resigned because of a clash of interest after her appointment to the Local Government Commission. Cr Brennan was unavailable for comment last evening. A report in “The Press” last week incorrectly said that Cr Brennan’s apology for the last meeting was not accepted.
