Seventy oppose Arts Centre flats

About 70 objections have been received to the proposal to put 30 serviced flats in the Christchurch Arts Centre. Objections to the public notification of the proposal from the Arts Centre trust board closed last week. The board had sought a specified departure for the proposal to allow the serviced apartments in the centre’s special cultural 1 zone. The Christchurch City Council’s city planner, Mr John Dryden, said yesterday objections numbered about 70. A hearing would not be held until the New Year, he said. Feeling has run strong among some tenants at the centre who object to space they believe should be available to working artists being used for "tourist accommodation.” The centre’s director, Mr Christopher Doig, has argued that the proposal which the board would build in patnership with a Wellington company, would give the centre some financial security.
