Ship ready for last voyage
PA Auckland When Greenpeace bought the Rainbow Warrior 10 years ago it was a rust heap, but she became a friend to the original crew members. Yesterday they prepared the ship for its last voyage today. Greenpeace members have been working in shifts to stay by the vessel since she was moved from the Western Viaduct to Marsden Wharf last Friday. “We have been doing it for safety reasons,” said the first mate, Mr Martin Gotje.
“It is good to be with her but at the same time it holds a, lot of.. sad memories. Lt was my turn to sleep on her on Sunday night and it was spooky.’! The Rainbow Warrior will be sunk at Matauri Bay to attract recreational divers. y Mr Gotje, who is also head of the Greenpeace Marine Division, said the organisation felt it was an appropriate, move. “The boat was always working to preserve life and now it will attract life,” he said. A Matauri Bay fisherman, Mr Dover Samuels, will film the sinking. ;
