Captaincy still unknown
The seemingly inevitable announcement of David Dempsey as Canterbury’s ‘ Shell Series cricket captain was not made yesterday, as had been scheduled. The Canterbury association’s own handbook listed the captaincy confirmation for November 30. The Shell team is to be released at a function arranged by the sponsor, Lion Breweries, late this afternoon. It is understood that the provincial selectors met the deadline for their captaincy recommendation. But the association’s chairman, Brian Adams, said yesterday that the identity of the captain had been held over until today. Dempsey has been the favoured candidate for the leadership since the start of the season, and on consecutive week-ends he has captained Town against Country, a Canterbury XI against Wellington and another Canterbury combination against a Marlborough Invitation XI. Ris results record has been impeccable.
